The repressive brutality he experiences behind bars mirrors a society at war, destroying itself with its own savagery. From the ashes of which he believes will come revolutionary victory. Based in part on the author's own experience of being imprisoned as an anarchist in France in 1912 and whilst still in prison at the outbreak of World War I forecasting that the result of the war would be revolution in Russia.
